"Fine Artist™" Program
The "Fine Artist" program was developed to bring a greater emphasis on fine arts and famous artists to elementary education, and is designed to encourage all children as artists. Each lesson is based on the work of one artist and guides students through the process of creating their own work of art. Emphasis is placed on concepts such as shape, contour, line, pattern, texture, perspective, and scale.
Kathleen Kane-Murrell is the program author, artist, and consultant. This program depends upon the participation of parent volunteers. You do not need to be an artist, or even artistic abilities to participate, just a willingness to help! Kathleen trains parent volunteers in simple step-by-step lessons at workshops, and the volunteers then teach the children in the classroom. Volunteers attend 1 workshop and teach (or help to teach) 1 lesson during the months of October, November, January, February, March, and April (6 total). The Fine Artist program is a best opportunity for working parents to volunteer at school, as the schedule for workshops and lessons is set in September for the entire year.
Studies have proven that fine art education reinforces the standard curriculum offered to students. The experience of being an artist translates into increased problem solving skills and a new "way of seeing". There is no wrong or right answers in art, and each child is able to express their own creativity and unique talents. Children who participate in this program during their elementary education are able to recognize the work of famous artists as well as use a variety of artistic mediums.
