Kumeyaay Elementary School Glossary
HOWL Outs - Caught Being Good Slips are given to students, usually during recess and/or lunch, for random acts of kindness. Students give these "slips" to their teachers and are entered in a drawing to win a prize of their choice at the monthly Super Star Awards.
Fine Arts/Family Art Night - Fine Artist is a program in which parent volunteers, trained by a consultant, provide art lessons to students by grade level about onece a month. Once a year, our very own Fine Artist consultant, Kathleen Kane-Murrell, teaches participating Kumeyaay families an art lesson. This is a fun event for the whole family to enjoy, and even learn about a specific artist or style of art. This is usually held on the weekday evening for a nominal fee.
Foundation - The Kumeyaay Foundation is a non-profit organization that was formed to primarily to fundraise for programs NOT provided through the district. 100% of the Foundation's proceeds go directly to support the science, art, music and technology programs at Kumeyaay.
Foundation Meetings - Foundation meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month in the school's Teacher's Lounge at 6:30 pm. The Foundation offers convenient, evening meetings for those parents that work and can't attend the PTA meetings during the day.
Park Playdates - The last Friday of every month is Playdate in the Park. On this day families gather after school at the Norte Park (adjacent to Kumeyaay) for an afternoon of play. This is a great opportunity for Kumeyaay families, especially new ones, to mingle. Snacks and water are highly recommended, and parents remember that there's not restroom at the park!
Running Club - Running club takes place every morning on the school sports field from 7:20 am to 7:40 am. Students receive a ticket per each lap they run. These tickets are logged in their classrooms, and students receive recognition for running 5, 10, 20, 50 and 100 miles at each Tribal Meeting.
Science Fair - The Science Fair is offered campus wide (K-5th grade) to students that would like to participate by conducting an appropriate science project. Our Science teacher, Mrs. Young, usually organizes the Fair in the Spring. The Fair is open to all students and parents to view.
Spring Fling - The Spring Fling is our Foundation's biggest fundraiser of the year. This parent's only event is a fun night of dinner, dancing, live/silent auctions and casino tables. Again, all the proceeds from the event go directly to support the science, art, music and technology programs at Kumeyaay.
Tribal Meetings - Tribal Meetings are held on the first Friday of each month. At these monthly meetings teachers, students and parents gather to discuss upcoming school events and fundraisers, as well as recognize running club miles and distribute awards. In addition, students often perform. Parents are highly encouraged to attend these informative meetings.
Variety Show - The Variety Show is a fun filled event in which our own students show off their talents. The show is usually pided into two days/night, one for the lower grades (K-2nd grades) and one for the upper grades (3rd-5th grades).
